"Spirit of the Estuary: Using Art to Understand Ecology" is a multi-disciplinary series that addresses wetland environmental issues through the integration of fine art, language arts, science, and social studies.  The ultimate goal of the "Spirit of the Estuary" is to create personal stewardship among citizens.

NOMINATE A YOUNG ECO-HERO FOR A $2,000 BARRON PRIZE!  The Gloria Barron Prize for Young Heroes seeks nominations for its 2007 awards honoring young people ages 8 to 18 that have shown leadership and courage in public service to people and our planet. Nomination deadline is April 30.

Proposals are being accepted to evaluate the impact of a unique set of healthy lifestyle activities in local settings that support the national HealthierUS Initiative. As part of the Take Action:  Healthy People, Places and Practices in Communities Project, the proposed activities should address one or more of the four parts of the HealthierUS initiative: 1) be physically active, 2) eat a nutritious diet, 3) get preventive screenings, and 4) make healthy choices/avoid risky behaviors.  The one-year project period will run from July 1, 2007 through June 30, 2008. Funding for these activities will be between $2,000 and $5,000 and a national evaluation of the project will be conducted. The deadline for receipt of proposals is March 30, 2007.  Background information on the project, proposal instructions and forms are also available.

The Volunteer Center of Southern Nevada is offering two free training seminars this month (Fran Smith at 892-2323):  "Advancing Your Board of Directors" (Thursday, March 22, 2007 1:30 to 5:00 pm) and “Fund Development for Board Members” (Friday, March 23, 2007  8:30 am to 11:00 am). 
The Captain Planet Foundation invites organizations that work with children and young adults to promote understanding of environmental issues to apply for awards ranging from $250 to $2,500.
